‘ZANU PF’s Call For National Prayer & Fasting Hypocritical’

The chief executive officer of the Women of Zimbabwe, Gender Equality & Empowerment Project Patricia Chinyoka says the ZANU PF government’s call for national prayer is hypocritical as it comes at a time when there are reports of looting and human rights violations by state actors.

In a statement on Sunday, Chinyoka said the abuse experienced by Zimbabweans at the hands of the government has accelerated since the November 2017 military coup. She wrote:

Zanu PF has called for a day of prayer and fasting on Monday 15 June. This is an insult to the long-suffering people of Zimbabwe.

Evidence of misappropriation of COVID-19 funds has emerged with allegations pointing to the First family’s involvement as well as Obadiah Moyo and the finance department.

There are also many corruption scandals that have been unearthed but remain unresolved. To ask us to pray in the face of these injustices is an insult to citizens.

Our message to Mnagagwa is that God’s word says Isaiah 1:15 ‘When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look at you; even if you offer countless prayers, I will not listen, your hands are covered with blood’.

This comes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa proclaimed Monday 15 June 2020 as the Presidential National Day of Prayer and Fasting to seek healing, as the country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, there have been reports of massive looting of millions of government funds under the guise of procuring equipment for fighting COVID-19, with government officials awarding contracts worth tens of millions of US dollars to shadowy companies without following due process.
