Thokozani Khupe Calls Off MDC-T Congress

THE MDC-T interim leader Thokozani Khupe has reportedly called off the party’s Supreme Court-sanctioned Extraordinary Congress due to irregularities on the voters roll said to have been brought by interim secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora.

The congress was scheduled for this Saturday in Harare and had received the police’s green light.

NewsDay was told by party insiders that party elections agents yesterday spent the good part of the day locked
in meetings to verify the 2014 party structures, comparing with Mwonzora’s roll.

The publication was also told that the roll had names but without positions which they held at the time. The sources said:

“It’s been agreed (to cancel the congress). The party will seek another postponement at the court.”

Party acting spokesperson Tapiwa Mashakada could neither confirm nor deny that the party had postponed the congress, saying they had encountered a ‘small glitch’ in the process of holding the congress. He said:

“There has been a small glitch which we encountered and we are working on it overnight. We have agreed to issue a statement tomorrow ( today) and explain the issues. It’s a small glitch which we are resolving.”

The Supreme Court in March ordered the party to hold an elective extraordinary congress to elect the heir to the party’s late founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai who succumbed to cancer on 14 February 2018.

The congress is aimed at resolving the prolonged leadership crisis that has caused huge divisions in the MDC. Khupe, Mwonzora, Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi are contesting for the presidency.
