Prominent Harare lawyer Advocate Thabani Mpofu on Monday morning presented himself to police following a raid by about 11 people at his home on Sunday.
MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa confirmed the development, saying Advocate Mpofu was accompanied to the police by prominent human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa. Chamisa said:
Just been informed that Advocate Thabani Mpofu presented himself to the police in the company of Lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa after indications that the police were looking for him. We are yet to be informed about the reasons behind all this.
Journalist Hopewell Chon’ono said Mpofu’s lawyers went to Morris Depot this morning to find out why he was wanted. Chin’ono tweeted:
Advocate Thabani Mpofu’s @adv_fulcrum home was raided by 11 people yesterday, some armed.
This was after they had been to his former home.
This morning they went to his home & interrogated his guard.
His lawyers went to Morris depot this morning to find out why he was wanted
The police refused to tell the lawyers anything in his absence.
The lawyers went back to Morris Depot with him and are yet to hear what this is all about.
The Investigating Officer is Detective Chief Inspector Mazhawidza.
This comes after Alex Magaisa, a former advisor to the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, claimed last week that there were plans to arrest Mpofu on some “trumped-up charges”. Magaisa said then:
I’m advised elements of the system are coming after top lawyer, Adv. Thabani Mpofu. The plan is to arrest him on some trumped-up charges.
Adv. Mpofu has been a prominent counsel for the opposition MDC A. It’s part of a relentless campaign to decimate the opposition & its pillars.
