The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has said the government should stop viewing at civic organisations as ‘passionate’ critics of the government.

The Forum was reacting to allegations by the minister of Home Affairs, Kazembe Kazembe that the three female members of the opposition MDC Alliance, Joannah Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri staged their abduction assumably with the help of groups members to the Forum.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Forum dismissed the allegations saying:

“It is high time government stops having imaginary enemies, engaging in diversionary tactics, and delivers on its constitutional duty to ensure the safety, security and welfare of its citizens.

Our members have worked ceaselessly, including lending their expertise in aid to the government-led fight against COVID-19. The mentioned CSOs in the minister’s statement are long-standing, bona fide civil society organisations.

The Forum added that usually, those who would have been named by government and ruling officials are eventually attacked, verbally and or physically.

The government has in the past proposed that the alleged abductions in the country are staged, undertaken by G40 or a third party to tarnish the image of the government.

The trio was allegedly abducted from police custody by suspected state security agents.
